Eliza Richmond, deceased's wife, stated that she last saw her husband alive a t half-past ten on the previous Tuesday morning, when he left home to go to his work at Northowram. Uriah Jagger, aged 15 years, said that about 20 minutes to nine on the previous morning (Friday) he was searching for some stray ducks when he saw a man's body in Shibden Mill beck, near Shibden Mill. He gave information at the mill, and Joseph Crossley and others went to the place immediately. Thomas Benn, landlord of the Shibden Mill Inn, deposed hearing of a body being found in the beck, and on going to the place he found the deceased in the water, with which, however, he was only partially covered. He appeared to have been dead for some days. Deceased left witness's house at the edge of dark on the previous Tuesday evening , and that was the last time witness saw him alive. He was then quite well and cheerful, bu t was fresh. He seemed able to take care of himself. Hannah Whitworth, who had laid out the body, said there were no marks of violence on the deceased. The jury returned the following verdict :- "That deceased was found dead in the said beck without marks of violence, having accidentally fallen into the same through missing his way, and has died from exposure to the cold." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 "Census Data". 2 "Death Certificate". 3 "St John the Baptist, Halifax". | ||||
